Seeding Success

Agricultural Farming Initiatives

The Seeding Success (SS) program is designed to improve economic security through agricultural production. SS fosters sustainable farming practices that are economically efficient, locally appropriate, and profitable. The program has two interconnected components: 1) a Farmer Field School and 2) a Master Farmer Program.

Farmer Field School

The Farmer Field School program supports full-time farmers by teaching sustainable agricultural techniques using a cost-effective approach accessible to someone making 49 cents daily. During the program, participants meet regularly at a demonstration garden and take business and agricultural training. Once a new lesson is taught, participants demonstrate lessons learned by applying the newly discovered skill at the demonstration site under a trained instructor before devoting those learnings to their own gardens.

At the end of the season, they sell the produce and share the profits. Each farmer also has a home garden, which results in increased crop production and a growing and steady income. To ensure active female engagement, 50% of Farmer Field School spots are held for female participants, although they have thus far been composed of much higher percentages of women with an engagement rate of 82%.

Master Farmer Program

The Master Farmer Program operates on a more part-time, flexible schedule, which allows community members with other commitments (e.g., teachers, youth, nurses, mothers, and government officials) to participate. Unlike the Farmer Field School program, these individuals can engage fully in the Master Farmer Program while maintaining their responsibilities and careers outside of farming.

In other words, we hope to inspire community members in alternative sectors to feel motivated to begin small gardens to better feed their families and receive supplemental income while still maintaining their current vocations. To ensure that women have access to these opportunities, we have set a target of a minimum of 65% female.

Program Impact

  • 95,000 bundles of vegetables and crops grown, potentially yielding over $45,000 if all bundles were sold

Voices of IMPACT

I am overjoyed and proud to graduate from this program. Despite challenges from my distant village, my determination to learn organic agriculture kept me going. Now proficient in growing nakatie, it's become a steady source of income, providing stability and encouraging bigger dreams. With heartfelt gratitude to my supporters, this program has empowered me to create a better future. With newfound confidence, I'm ready to embrace what lies ahead.
